WHY DO PEOPLE FLEE THEIR OWN COUNTRY AND LEAVE EVERY THING BEHIND?

BACKGROUND OF DISPLACEMENT :

  • Involvement in politics?
  • Persecution by government?
  • Fundamentalism?
  • Being a woman?

Poem by Aisha:

I am an asylum seeker

My name is asylum seeker
I was born in here
Here in the detention center
The center is covered in wires
The wires is 1, 2, 3
1 is the wire of closure
2 is the coiled barbed wire
3 is the protection wire for 1and 2
3 is the razor wire on top of 2
3 is the high defense

The higher defense
Which stops birds coming inside
Stops thoughts and imaginations
Which stops the world outside
The higher defense which becomes the border between me and the United
Kingdom

I am asylum
I was in this center
The center is in Dover
Dover is far from Cardiff

It has security inside
Are there people from all over the world there?
No
Not from everywhere
There are no Americans, no Irish; there are no French, no Belgians, no
Germans, there are no Japanese inside.
It's a multicultural center but it has only one culture inside
a third world culture

I am asylum
Born detained but not to be detained
I am thinking
How did I get here?
How did I find myself here?
Here in the detention center
I don't even know why I'm here
Nobody tells me why I'm here

I am asylum, in the detention center, in Dover, in the United Kingdom
